Return of the Moviethon

Posters

Both me and my wife are extremely fond of movies as some of you very well know; we watched 370 odd movies in 2013! During some of the weekends we watched 10-12 movies! Mind boggling eh! We had a ball enjoying all those Moviethons while our son was kicking and jumping inside his mother’s womb! But since he was born in January 2014, our movie watching pace has considerably slowed down as we tend to spend maximum possible time with him seeing him grow up! so our Moviethons have completely vanished since then!

But the Moviethon returned with a vengeance this weekend! We watched 7 movies and across a lot of different genres & languages – Spanish, Hebrew, French, English, Polish and even Georgian which was a first for us! And each of the 7 movies were decent in their own right and I have written brief reviews for each one of them with my ratings…hope you would include them in your to-watch list too!

For the record, our 2014 Movie Count is just 104 so far! Let’s see how 2014 Movie experience ends! on a high or with a whimper!

2423__talk_to_her_(2002)movie_ Talk to Her

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk_to_Her

This one is a Spanish movie by of the Master Director Pedro Almodóvar & is an offbeat drama that explores  the friendship of two men brought together under unusual but strangely similar circumstances. Not one of  the best movies of Pedro in my books but even then pretty decent on it’s own! It is a wild & thoughtful take  about sexuality, loneliness, intimacy and the persistence of love beyond loss! The film won the 2002  Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and the 2003 Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign-Language  Film. My rating 3/5…

100492 In Bloom

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Bloom_(2013_film)

This is the first Georgian movie I have watched and a brilliant debut indeed! This is a Drama film about 2  young school-going girls Eka and Natia who are inseparable friends growing up in the newly independent  Georgia after the collapse of the Soviet Union! They experience life in their school, on the streets dealing  with eve-teasing boys, standing in queues fighting for Bread collection and at their home with their sisters  & cousins. For these 2 girls “in bloom” life takes a horrible turn as the story progresses. A brilliantly made  movie it showed me Georgia for the first time & I hope to see more of their Cinema! Definitely a must-  watch…My rating 3.5/5…

babadook-poster The Babadook

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Babadook

Another movie adds up in the long list of acclaimed & popular “horror” movies which failed to scare me! 98%  on Rotten Tomatoes, 87% on Metacritic & 6.9/10 on IMDb! This Aussie film is about a single mother who is  struggling at her job & life due to her unstable son who starts interacting with the Babadook! A well-made  movie and one which tried it’s best to scare me but didn’t succeed even though i enjoyed watching it! The best  part of this movie is the unexpected ending! so to all the horror genre fans out there…do give it a shot! My  rating 2.5/5…

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ida_(film)

This is a Polish Coming-of-Age Drama film about a young women in search of her biological parents  before she takes the Catholic nun vows…and how she has a life-changing experience! This is about  separation, belonging, family ties and love! The movie is shot in B&W format & it creates a surreal effect!  The Lead actress Agata Trzebuchowska has done a remarkable job so as her aunt played by Agata Kulesza!  The movie is haunting & not an entertaining one but is a definite must watch for how well such a delicate  topic has been handled! I thoroughly enjoyed it…My rating 3.5/5..

immigrant_ver7_xxlg The Immigrant

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Immigrant_(2013_film)

This is one of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2014 (even though it was released at Cannes in 2013)  and it is worth all the hype & acclaim! This is about Ewa Cybulski (Marion Cotillard) who enters US with her  ailing sister & becomes an illegal American Immigrant & faces innumerable challenges in earning her  livelihood. She falls prey to Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), a charming but wicked man who takes her in and    forces her into prostitution. Cotillard has done a fabulous job especially with her Polish-English accent &  portrays the emotions of pain, frustration & anxiety superbly. Phoenix as always shines all the way through!  It is a bleak, dark & cold film and has almost no humour moments! It is a very well-made film and is highly  recommended…my rating 3.5/5…

policeman_poster Policeman

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Policeman_(film)

This one is an Israeli drama film is a story of a confrontation between a group of young revolutionaries  plotting to kidnap some local tycoons and a police officer who is the spiritual leader and alpha male among  his peers, a small, highly trained team that is part of the Israeli Defense Ministry’s Anti-Terrorism unit. The  film has a lot of subtle, hidden & abstract connotations which one can derive and is one of the rare Israeli  movies which doesn’t talk about the Palestine crisis! The ending of the film is very moving & would force you  to think about what precedes the last scene! Do watch this to get an altogether different perspective of the  Israeli Cinema! My rating 3/5…

TwoDays-oneSheet Two Days, One Night

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two_Days,_One_Night

This is one of the most admired movies of 2014 so far and rightly so! It is a French language Belgian  Drama about Sandra (Cotillard) who gets released from the hospital to find that she no longer has a job  & the only way she can hope to regain her position is to convince her co-workers to sacrifice their much-  needed yearly bonuses! Stunning performance by Cotillard & it is so natural that you can feel her  depression, pain & anguish all the way through! The movie has been shot in a raw format to make it    authentic & this format shines! It is a fascinating movie and one which would be enjoyed by everybody!  definitely a must-watch…my rating 3.5/5…
