Calamari Masala

IMG_20150815_134511-01

I have always enjoyed eating Calamari/Squid since my Goa days and have it everytime I find them on any menu! I bought frozen Calamari last week and wanted to make a quick and spicy recipe!

I had to look no further; found an awesome recipe on Sikandalous Cuisine. BIG THANKS to Hifazath Rahman for the lovely recipe. This is spicy, delicious and very easy to make; loved the fennel part the most! I made just a few changes in the recipe thanks to Rajeev Nandagopal and Jocelyn John for their valuable advice last night. Do give it a shot folks…

Ingredients:

Calamari – 250 gms (I used the frozen ones)
Red Chilli Powder- 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder- 1/2 tsp

For the roast:
Oil – 2 tsp
Fennel Seeds- 1 1/2 tsp
Mustard Seeds- 1 1/2 tsp
7-8 Curry Leaves
Onion- 1 finely chopped
Garlic – 3 pods crushed
Ginger – one small piece crushed
Green Chillies – 2 slit lengthwise
Red Chilli Powder- 1 tsp
Tomato – 1 finely chopped
Garam Masala Powder- 1/4 tsp
Salt as per taste

Method:

1. Marinate the calamari rings in red chilli powder and turmeric for half an hour.

2. Pour 1 tsp oil in a kadhai, crackle some curry leaves and then the marinated calamari. Let it cook for 3-4 minutes. Remove it and keep it aside.

3. In the same pan, add 1 tsp oil. Then add fennel seeds and mustard seeds. Once they splutter, add the onions, crushed garlic, ginger and green chillies. Bhunno till they turn brown.

4. Then add the tomatoes, sprinkle garam masala, red chilli powder and salt as per taste. Bhunno for 5 minutes.

5. Finally add the calamari, mix with the masala paste and let them rest with the lid closed for 10 minutes.

6. Serve them as a starter dish and enjoy with hot tawa rotis.

7. Thank Hifazath Rahman first, then Rajeev Nandagopal and Jocelyn John and finally me later.

So till the time we meet again…

Cheers to life…

Till then ride safe and have safe sex…

Inquilab Zindabad…

Hasta la Victoria Siempre…
