Movie Reviews – Thithi, Kali and Iraivi

PhotoGrid_1467625022953

I am always on the lookout for diverse cinematic experiences and due to the lack of widespread good quality Cinema in India, I tend to watch much more movies which are from outside of India but then there are a lot of new generation Indian film-makers who are making fantastic movies about new themes which is so refreshing!

Watched 3 such movies in the last few days and all 3 are of different Indian regional languages – Kannada, Malayalam and Tamil! Had a wonderful time watching all of them and hope more such movies are made to the delight of viewers like us!

All 3 movies are very realistic and so relatable that I felt like I was so close to the characters etched in these movies. I strongly recommend you to find some time and watch these movies! There is always some space for such movies amidst the “Sultans” of the World!

Thithi

THITHI-intl_poster

Thithi is a Kannada drama film and by far my favourite film of 2016 so far. The film starts when a nasty old man named Century Gowda dies at 101 and the villagers plan an elaborate send-off, sparking off a series of events involving his family! The entire cast comprises of non-professional actors from the region led by a beautiful performance by Chennagowda as the enigmatic, free-spirited Gadappa! He is the DUDE of Indian Cinema, PERIOD! Hee spends his time wandering around aimlessly, puffing beedis and swigging cheap liquor, with a weird smile on his face. His son,Thamanna, is the opposite of him – always worried & tense and then there is Abhi, a charged-up teenager with funny grin who is unstoppable! This movie is a fantastic cinematic rendition of the Indian Joint Family with so many dark layers underneath, all of which are presented in an in-the-face manner. I loved the character of the old man who appears from nowhere to dance with wild abandon every time a band plays in the village (he was a close 2nd behind Gadappa). This film directed by Raam Reddy, who is just 26 years-old, is an economics graduate from Delhi’s St Stephen’s College and a published author to boot is absolutely fantastic and just can’t be missed. My rating 5/5…

Kali

??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Kali is a Malayalam action-thriller romantic-drama film directed by Sameer Thahir & starring Dulquer Salmaan and Sai Pallavi. ‘Kali’, meaning ‘rage’, explores the dangerous emotions and its ramifications on a couple’s life. I could relate a lot to this movie as I have had a really bad temper in the past and have done some horrendous things but since my marriage have calmed down a lot! Dulquer has done a great job of a man possessed by rage & anger with his seething eyes. Sai Pallavi impresses her with effortless screen presence and simplicity of expressions. The movie starts with an easy pace and reaches a crescendo by the end of it. The ending was simply fantabulous! We could feel the tension brewing and just like the 2 characters felt hopeless. But the smashing climax made us WOW! Do watch this movie folks, you are gonna love it too….My rating 4/5…

Iraivi

Iraivi-1

Iraivi is a Tamil Drama film about 3 friends and about their roller-coaster ride! Iraivi means Goddess in Tamil and for me this movie was more about the 3 women in the movie than the men! I loved Karthik Subbaraj’s first 2 movies – Pizza and Jigarthanda, both of which were simply fantastic. But I won’t put Iraivi in the same league as it seemed disjointed to me with too many sub plots squeezed in. It is definitely a fascinating & out-of-the-box movie about social evils, friendships and betrayals; such movies are rarely made in India so for this Subbaraj deserves a huge round of applause. All the 3 male leads – SJ Surya, Vijay Sethupathi and Bobby Simha have done a great job and I thoroughly enjoyed the the exceptional music, cinematography and the thought-provoking message presented through the film. It is a different sort of a film and one which must be watched! My rating 3.5/5…
